Mikel’s Paul Mitchell Experience

9 10 2013

My hair is long. Scratch that, my hair was long.

IMG_9016Over the weekend, I got my hair chopped so that I can donate it to Pantene Pro-V’s Beautiful Lengths program.

“Beautiful Lengths is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society, the largest non-profit health organization committed to saving lives from every cancer and improving the quality of life for people facing the disease. The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong,* beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. So far, Pantene has donated 24,000 free real-hair wigs to the American Cancer Society’s wig banks, which distribute wigs to cancer patients across the country.”

My friend Meghann donated her hair earlier this year, and I was inspired to do the same. But at the beginning of summer (probably the most appropriate time for a Florida gal to go short) I just wasn’t ready to chop it all off.  Early last week as I looked at my ridiculously long, WAY overdue for a haircut hair, I decided that it would be this time I made the change.

When I moved to Florida, I asked around for salon suggestions. When one of my friends told me about Mikel’s, where  you get a glass of wine while you wait, I was sold. Mikel’s The Paul Mitchell Experience is a small-ish salon right off of MacDiill in South Tampa. I’ve been seeing the fabulous Dillon K every time I go, and he is awesome. He’s also a child of the 80s, so we bond over “the good old days.” I’m also super impressed every time he tells me about his professional development-he’s a master educator and gets to train others on all the latest Paul Mitchell designs/products etc.!

Once you check in, the hostess (? is that what you call her?) asks you what you want to drink- wine, beer, coffee, soda, water- and brings it in a fancy little tray with some cute flowers.

IMG_5676I’ve never had to wait long, and after only a few minutes, Dillon takes me back to the “Lather Lounge” to wash my hair. This isn’t just your normal pre-haircut wash. There’s a menu of options you can select for how you want to enjoy a few minutes of relaxation while you get pampered- you can get an extra scalp massage, use some aromatherapy, or even get a mini facial. I completely forgot to look at the menu before I went in, so I went with Dillon’s first suggestion: an extra long scalp massage.

After a few minutes of peace and quiet (there’s a “Shhh” sign inside and they play relaxing spa music), it’s back out to the front to get started. Dillon carefully measured the 8 inch ponytail that was required for the donation and with a quick snip of the scissors, it was off! What was left actually ended up not being as short as I had expected, which was somewhat of a relief. Isn’t it funny how the thought of really short hair was scary to me? It’s just hair- it will grow back!

Dillon shaped and straighten up the cut, and before I knew it, I was done and ready for my “after” shot!

I love it! Thank you Dillon! I’m so happy I could donate to a good cause!

And, just for fun, here’s the photo that was posted on Mikel’s Instagram account:
