Running for Brews

7 04 2012

I don’t usually post on weekends, but I didn’t get around to typing this up Thursday night/Friday morning. Hopefully, by the time you read this, I’ll either be in the middle of a 20 mile run, or I’ll have successfully completed my 20 miler. You’ll find out how it all went down on Monday:-)

This week, I got my runs in by doing something fun- I went to a running group hosted by some bars in South Tampa!

I like running and I like beer, so on Tuesday and Thursday last week, I went to the Running for Brews run group! The group started in 2010, and they’ve been doing weekly fun runs ever since! There are a few different locations, but I went to the one in South Tampa. It meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. Tuesdays are at MacDintons, and Thursdays are at World of Beer.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the run, so I went on my own 3 mile run before hand. I kept a decent pace I think, but I don’t know if I can trust my Garmin, when it tells me I did this:

I did a run/swim/run apparently? Or I can walk on water? hahah 😉

I got home from my short run, grabbed my ID and some cash, and walked over to MacDintons. I spotted a group of people in running gear, and headed their way. The group seemed well organized; there were three clearly marked areas to fill out a waiver, sign in, and hydrate. A little after 7,  30 or so runners ran a 3.2 mile loop around the neighborhood.

Right before the start of the run, I met Jennica, who had just moved to Tampa on Sunday (!!!).  Being two newbies to Tampa and to the group, we hit it off, and chatted throughout the run. We got back to the bar, and the group organizer gave away some prizes and told us the drink and food specials. (I didn’t win anything 😦 ) Jennica and I sat down and chatted for awhile more, and I ordered a black and bleu burger:

It was pretty good, but not amazing. It was getting late, so Jennica and I exchanged numbers. Haha, that totally sounds like we were on a date! And, its funny because after we parted ways, I was totally doing the whole, “Well, I think it went well; I don’t know; did she think it went well?” I’ll let you know how it tuns out;-)

On Thursday, I went to WOB for the group. This time, there were a ton of people there!

Can you find me? I’m in the middle, in a white shirt!

We did a different loop this time, and I made another friend 🙂 Carrie and I ran together, and when she told me that her job is to survey properties for various wildlife, I kept asking her question after question after question! Her job sounded so cool and SO different from what I do. It really made me want a job that doesn’t require me to sit in an office on my butt all day long!

We got back to the bar, and again there were giveaways and drink specials. 🙂 Carrie and I chatted some more, and we met a few others. A guy started talking to us, and when I told him I went to Wheaton college, his jaw dropped. He went there for a few semesters before transferring to the University of Chicago. He called over his brother, who also happened to go to Wheaton and graduated a year before me! I didn’t know him when I was there, but we have a mutual friend (who actually is one of my good friends who lives in DC!) Crazy, right?

I had a really great time at the Running for Brews events this week! It’s a fun group of people, and you can run at whatever pace you like. It seems like a lot of folks are regulars there, but there’s usually at least a few newbies looking for a friendly face. I can’t wait to go back!

Question of the day: Are you part of a running group? What was your first time going like?

These runs sound and look like so much fun!
I should join sometime if I can get off work in time (in Lakeland) and back over to Tampa. What time do they normally begin – 7:30p?

Great post! My boyfriend and I starting running with Running for Brews in the middle of February. I was training for my first ever marathon of any kind! I was training for Disney’s Princess Half Marathon and I figured I could use all the motivation I could get. We live fairly close to the SoHo area so we were delighted to know that this group existed (of course, it didn’t hurt that they finish the runs at a bar with drink specials!). Running for Brews is a great way to meet new people who share the hobby of running and it’s a great way to stay motivated if you are training for a run! There are runners of all speeds (I myself am a very slow runner) so it’s easy to find a run buddy. See you Thursday!
