…And 45 is not 48, or 50

Chloe had planned on riding 50 miles this weekend, but ended up riding 48 miles, her ride shortened due to a nagging pain in her knee. 😦   Ironically, I had also planned to ride 50 this weekend, but my 50 ended up being cut short as well, however it wasn’t due to injury…

Monday morning, I headed up to Poolsville, MD with my boyfriend to meet up with Erin and her husband, Erin’s colleague and her boyfriend, and my friend Steph to hit up the “country” roads and get in a good long ride, away from the city traffic and crowded trails.

I printed out cue sheets for 60, 40, 30, and 20 mile rides, and figured we’d discuss riding plans when we were all together. (I taped mine to my leg so I could keep track of where we were going, but I didn’t find that to be the best location for the cue sheet. Anyone have other suggestions for holding the cue sheet?)

We decided that the group would do the 30 mile loop, and then some of us would continue on and do the 20 in addition to the original 30 to make our 50.

After only a few minutes into our ride, we saw several of these:

going for a weekend joy ride. They zoomed right by us, uncomfortably close, and thankfully we didn’t see them again!

The rest of the 30 mile loop was pretty uneventful; we settled into a groove, chatted with each other, and enjoyed the rolling hills.

It was pretty steamy, with temperatures creeping into the 90s and ridiculous humidity. It is so important to stay hydrated while working out, especially on hot days. The body sweats to cool down, but when you sweat you lose fluid. You need to replace those fluids! I stayed hydrated with a bottle of Gatorade and a bottle of water on the ride. When the 30 mile loop ended, the riders who were continuing onto the 20 mile loop took a quick stop to refill our water bottles. It was almost noon by then, and with the sun blazing, we would need it!

So we started our ride, and just as we were getting to one of the shady, hilly sections…BANG!

No, I did not fall off my bike. And, nope not a flat tire.


UM. HOLY CRAP THAT’S A GUN! Off in the woods, someone was definitely shooting a gun, close enough we could hear them reloading. I’m sure whoever it was knew what he/she was doing and was safely shooting into a trap or at a target…BUT, we couldn’t see who was shooting and where the shots were coming from, so we QUICKLY expediently turned around and headed back to our cars. Sorry, no 50 miles today. Better to be safe than sorry! So, we got in a good 45 miles rather than our planned 50. Oh well!

Safely back in our cars, though a bit shaken, we headed to Erin’s place, where brunch was being prepared!

Post-ride meal included fresh fruit, toast and jam, bacon and chocolate chip pancakes!!! This food hit. the. spot. 🙂

This was an awesome way to wrap up the holiday weekend: a long ride, good food, and good friends 🙂 I’m already looking forward to planning another ride & brunch. Hopefully next time it will be uneventful, and we’ll get in the entire 50 🙂
