If you are a “longtime” reader of 321delish, you know that I like food. I like cooking, smelling, making, baking, reading about, writing about and eating good food. My love of food has blossomed in this wide world of food/triathlon/running/swimming/biking and exercising bloggers, where I am in great company :), but my foodie interests have been around much longer than my blogging interests. I was lucky enough to grow up in a household of food loving fanatics. A foodie family if you will.
We are also beach loving fanatics, but that is beside the point…today’s post is about food. Now, I know that spending time with family, especially around celebrations, is often associated with decadent meals that start with tasty appetizers and end with one too many servings of that “I can only have this at X holiday dessert,” but my family takes it to a whole new level. The way in which my family prepares, savors and eats food surely puts them in a category of a foodie family rather than a food loving family….
TOP 10 REASONS YOU ARE PART OF A FOODIE FAMILY
- There are never too many cooks in the kitchen…because at every family meal each member chooses a dish to contribute.
- When you order out at restaurants, you check in with you family members before ordering to make sure that no two of the same appetizer or entree is ordered to ensure trying as many delicious options as possible.
- You learned what the “legs” on a wine glass was long before you were at an age when you could legally drink.
- Any item ordered off of a menu at a restaurant is intended to be shared among the table.
- 1/2 of the conversation at the dinner table involves discussion over the ingredients in the dish being eaten or the ways in which the dish could be made tastier.
- The sauce of any dish served is always tasted first.
- You were told as a small child that nothing short of a red knob bed Wolf stove would suffice in a “nice” kitchen.
- Spaghetti and Meatballs is no longer an “easy weeknight meal.”
- Your boyfriend leaves
his firstall nice dinners out with your family and states: “wow, that was intense,” simply because of the way that your family talked about the food. - You find this video funny, but also not SO far from the truth.
And with that, I will leave you with a few pictures of the decadent food that I enjoyed with my family this past weekend…

Pork Chop stuffed with pineapple and ricotta cooked in a bing cherry glaze with polenta cakes on the side.
And …because I am not going to pretend that my family is always patient and delicate with our food… and that just like any other family, the last bite is always the most precious….a few pictures of my siblings and I “sharing” aka fighting for bites over a caramel covered apple topped with chocolate and macadamia nuts.
Question of the Day: Is your family a foodie family, a family who loves food, or a family who bonds and enjoys a different activity all together?
this is so my family!
My mom is from Italy and her side of the family is veyr intense with freshly made italian food. I think she cried when I told her I used pasta sauce that came in a jar in college.
haha. I LOVE freshly made pasta! you are luuuuuckkyyyy
Seriously? People eat like that?
I guess I’m definitely NOT part of a foodie family, then…
I think I may have to consider a post on “The Top 10 Reasons You Know You’re NOT Part of a Foodie Family.” #1 is: Dinner is delivered by an acne-scarred kid wearing a uniform.
😉
Fun post – thank you!
haha that would be so funny! In my house we SOMETIMES do “take out” but it often comes in the form of Egyptian or some other ethnic food.
Fun!
I’d add that a foodie family is one that, even as you are in the middle of preparing or enjoying a fab meal — is already discussing, planning and salivating over the next! In our house, dessert is eaten defensively (fork out, hand cupped protectively around plate), as someone is bound to swoop in and “help” you finish.
TOTALLY AGREE! the oh so famous “just one bite”
Funny, I don’t recognize you as a member of our family, yet you just described my mom’s side perfectly. 🙂
It’s little touches, like the starfruit in the cinnamon maple flan, that have me impressed. Is your family hiring? I’d love to apply to be a foodie with them!
Beautiful shots. My wife’s family isn’t really a foodie family, but mine is and we both are. Too many cooks though? I do tend to take over the kitchen.
it is definitely hard for me to keep my mouth closed when watching someone else cook in the kitchen. That’s why giving everyone the option of creating their own dish is a great solution!
Wow! Can I come to dinner? ;o)
OMG I definitely come from a foodie family! My husband and I alone do majority of the things you mention!
P.S. I have never heard of anyone (besides my husband) talk about “legs” on a wine glass! He makes homemade wine, so words like that are part of regular vocabulary! 😀
haha. yeah….the legs in a wine glass has almost turned into a joke in my house because we were swirling glasses of coke and water at such young ages haha
Your photos are making me hungry!!!! I am not sure about my family, but I am def a foodie!!!
LOL at #4–so true 🙂
Omg…our family loves food! When we go to a new city, we only eat at places that are only found in that city. I love it!
yes! That could be # 11. Vacations are planned around eating activities.
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed- I loved your post!
I’m from India, and we’re lucky since there exist million-dishes-per-region- and a million regions! There is always something new on the menu that we just have to try! With the dawn of globalization, it is also very interesting to sample Indian-ized versions of Italian, Mexican, South East Asian and Chinese cuisine, a trend which is currently doing the rounds in Indian food circles. Authentic is yumm-worthy too 🙂
Would love to plan a loongg holiday centered around discovering various types of food processes and results-and I’m sure my family will be game!
That type of vacation sounds AMAZING. A culinary tour of the world 🙂
mmm….yum! everything looks so good!
My kids and I spent the last weekend with my parents. Late Saturday night, they lay in sleeping bags on the floor of Grandma’s basement. I tucked them in, kissed their foreheads, and turned out the lights. As I crept up the stairs I heard my son whisper to his sister, “I can’t wait to see what’s for breakfast!”
Yep, pretty sure we are foodies.
On a side note, I also love to race (primarily ultras, but an occasional tri creeps in). Just last month my mom bought me a necklace that read: “will run for cupcakes.” I think being both a foodie and a fanatic is the most fantastic way to live.
Thanks for sharing!
New reader! Great post .. I am only on my coffee now, but suddenly starved for more. And yes, #4 is very true.
Really great post. Congrats on Freshly Pressed.
Thanks Jennifer!
haha, love this post! i am most definitely from a foodie family and can totally relate. jealous of all that amazing food!!
– Beth @ http://www.DiningAndDishing.com
we will have to get together soon and whip up some amazing food ourselves! So glad you had such a blast at fitbloggin. Im jealous…definitely need to plan to go next year!
Greetings fellow foodie and congrats on FP.
The food looks awesome in the pictures.
I raised a food loving bunch and one son who competed with me annually in a best burger contest became a chef.
We know we are a foodie family bacause:
1. Everyone who is cooking brings their own knives.
2. “Complexity” is in the vocabulary of my 3 year old granddaughter.
3. We make our own staples: mayonaise, ketchup and mustard (even cream of coconut).
4. We are food snobs and have been known to send food back to the kitchen at restaurants. (sorry, but when you can discern the baking soda in a waffle, that’s unacceptable).
5.People get nervous feeding my son and ask him to the kitchen when we are at friends.
6. Our favorite shows are Top Chef and Iron Chef.
More and more people seem to be cooking at home and becoming more proficient at it. Economy? It’s great fun!
haha I LOVE these! Thanks so much for sharing! I think that the importance and value of good food has increased. People are really realizing how good food impacts your body and mind.
Loved this post. I have #12: this tastes like it came in a can/box is THE WORST insult ever
haha yes. although I have to admit…I do like canned cranberry sauce!
What a great post! I come from a foodie family, dating back generations. The “legs on the wine glass” made me laugh, because I think I learned that when I was 7. So glad you were freshly pressed so that I could discover your blog. Love to see families sharing great food and conversation!
thanks for checking out our blog! we are honored to have gotten freshly pressed today!
I loved this! This is exactly how my family is too! I always chalked it up to our Italian roots, but it is good to see other families like this as well! CHEERS to great food!!!
you are not the first to mention Italian roots as being the cause of your foodie tendencies 🙂
We are a foodie family although as long as it is red the husband will drink it. He does not care about anythingelse. The kids get to cook one meal per month and love the opportunity. And at our house, add “Check, Please!” to the food shows line up.
I concur with Rufus and totally hog our kitchen. That being said, even our one daughter who doesn’t like veggies (we still don’t know how she ended up in our veg-centric family) tells me that if she doesn’t like food from hither and yon, its still not as good as our home cooking.
Love the photos and fun in this post!
Hello! I love, love, love your blog! We’re definitely a foodie family…there’s no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen and Central Market and the farmer’s market are our favorite stores. I’ll be posting recipes on my blog from time-to-time, stop by sometime if you need some new cooking ideas! incidentally, our last name is cook! also, those profiteroles look ah-ma-zing. congrats on fp!
going to the farmers market is definitly one of the highlights of my week! I usually create a meal out of samples haha. I will definitely check out your site! Thanks for checking out 321delish
My family is definitely a foodie family. Birthday cakes turn into a full day of baking and decorating, food is tasted 5-6 times while cooking by all family members to ensure it’s just right, and most restaurants don’t stand a chance against the criticism.
haha yes. the restaurant critique is right up there in that list!
foodie family… we eat at restaurants that exact way, with everyone getting something different and everyone trying everything.
Whoa, you nailed my family perfectly!! Though there’s no Italian roots, and we very rarely eat out. However, I think “watches only 1 television channel: the food network, and takes notes from every episode” needs to be added to this awesometastic list! Congrats on being freshly pressed, and if you ever feel the need for something new, hop on over to my blog!
Have a fun-derful day!
We have a good mix in my family but I’ve noticed a big lean towards foodieness and winodom. Wine tastings have become quite common for many family members for instance and they’re always trying to outdo the last one with the food prepared. I stay out of the prep fray but definitely join in the consume greedily phase.
Love it. The zuppa de pesce looks really great.
Thanks. http://calogeromirafoodand.wordpress.com
You know you are from a family of foodies when:
1) You announce via email to la familia that you have developed an allergy to peanuts, and you receive 19 responses with recipes for foods that TASTE like they have peanuts in them, but don’t.
2) Your little sister calls to cry with you over the phone when you learn you are allergic to glutens. Oh my God! How does one live without Sourdough bread? She cried a river with me.
3) Your boyfriend’s tells you that last Friday night out was “the best date ever”: an evening spent at my best friend’s house learning to make “real” bolognese sauce and homemade fusilli pasta.
Yep – we’re foodies.
love this! my family is far from…mac-n-cheese and cereal were staples in my home…in part because I’m a super picky eater. I need to be more adventurous!
Your family looks like a lot of fun! I was surprised to find that I’m not as much of a foodie as I had initially suspected, simply because I could not pronounce some of the yummy dishes listed. It all looks so good!
haha just because we are foodie doesnt mean we speak all languages haha. I can’t pronounce these either!
Hey, nice post.
I’ve got new blog, so feel free to check it out. 🙂
Hugs.
Congrats on making “Freshly Pressed”. I certainly related to many of your top 10 list – when making plans to catch up the food to prepare/bring/take is usually first on the agenda! 🙂
LOL
You missed out the main one: the family discusses the lunch menu at breakfast, the dinner menu at lunch and the breakfast menu at dinner…
Everything looks so delish … I want the panne cotta.
I’d add one to your list – You take photos of every dish you eat at a restaurant. My non-foodie friends just don’t get why we take photos of our food in public.
Haha, this is SO my family! My husband still doesn’t get it… he can handle the analysis of flavor, but all the sharing drives him nuts.
Yum!! Sooooo much amazing looking food! I love the pics of you and your siblings! They look so much like you:). My family is not necessarily a “foodie” family, but I grew up with a dad that loved to cook (and hates spending money), so while we don’t go out to eat a lot, we’re big into making good recipes at home, and are always sharing new recipes!
This is a great post! I can SO relate!
Also you know you are from a food family when your conversations are centered around what you made for dinner, what you will be making for dinner the next night, and where you want to eat this weekend…etc etc
🙂
Jen
I think we’d be a semi-foodie family. Because it’s more like 2 or 3 people cook and then everyone really enjoys it and talks about it. The restaurant food sharing thing is a built-in genetic foundation… we just can’t help ourselves but share 🙂
How true, how true! A foodie family is one who shares. That’s for certain. I started laughing out loud when you talked about “checking” with family to be certain nobody else had ordered the same entree. Happens all the time in our family!
sharing is caring 🙂 haha
Ha. pretty much all 10 of those ring true for my family.
Hmmm…do cereal, microwave popcorn, and Nutella spread on a waffle count as dinner and foodie-ism? Probably not.
That is great! I work with a foodie staff. That makes for interesting times. Thanks for sharing and agree.
too delicious
those dishes look too mouth watering
wow..im loving all this food!!…convince your family to adopt me PLEASE!!! lol
I’d add that a foodie family is one that, even as you are in the middle of preparing or enjoying a fab meal — is already discussing, planning and salivating over the next! Love this post! This post definitely describes my husband and I, especially number 8 which says, “Spaghetti and Meatballs is no longer an ‘“easy weeknight meal.”’ Since I have taken to hand rolling noodles, spaghetti is definitely not your average weeknight meal anymore.
wow! I don’t make my own pasta yet 🙂 I bet your spaghetti is amazing though!
Haha.. your desserts won me over! My family loves food, eating, etc., but doesn’t seem to enjoy the cooking (or preparation) stages. I, on the other hand, love baking and creating unique, improv dishes. Maybe I’ll mother a foodie family. 🙂

That’s so wonderful. I wish more people I know loved food as much as did. You do comment on “sharing” but truthfully, do you get territorial over your food? Because sometimes I don’t like to share….it’s like I’m expecting a famine.

OMG! Does your family really eat like that! Can I become your long-last sister? I love food too, as does most of my family, but unfortunately there are only a few good cooks. And we have vegetarians in our family so dinners are never quite as delicious as yours! Great blog~
I come from a foodie fam too. Food makes us closer(to the table)together..haha!You have an awesome family, just don’t forget about your health. A healthy foodie family, is a happy family.
That is so like my grandmother to ask us during lunch what is for dinner! 😀
I definitely come from a foodie family: we have to share at restaurants, we have to defend our food if we eat slowly, and we are always trying new things!
thanks for sharing and congratulations on the FP
Those dishes looked good!
