Race Recap: 321delish Takes on the Kinetic Sprint

Hey there Friends! Hows it going?

In case you missed Steph’s post yesterday about our weekends…I’ll recap: it was busy! But the highlight of the weekend was the 2011 Kinetic Spring Triathlon on Sunday. Steph and I both chose this race as our season opener. Both of our “A” races are longer (Steph’s will be the Rockett’s Landing Mid Atlantic Olympic and mine is the Musselman 1/2 Ironman ), so we decided to get our first race of the season jitters/kinks out together by heading to Spottsylvania VA for the Kinetic Sprint. The race was 750 meter swim, 18 mile bike and 5k run.

We started our pre-race pump up festivities on Saturday night with some REDICULOUSLYDELICIOUS (and colorful) pasta (*recipe to come later this week!), a little Blue Crush action, some Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups, and a sleepover 🙂 Any other Blue Crush fans out there??? I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

I absolutely NEVER have trouble sleeping but it took me forever to fall asleep on Saturday night. I guess it was the race day nerves. Our alarm went off bright and early at 5:45. I had prepared a peanut butter and banana sandwich on a baguette the night before and Steph had put together some OIAJ. So we grabbed our breakfasts, filled our water bottles and were out the door. It had been storming like crazy on Saturday night so we were a bit worried about what the conditions would be like on Sunday, but it turned out to be a great day to race! No rain whatsoever! I requested a pit stop at Dunkin to get my caffeine fix 🙂

We got to the race at about 7:45. The first wave didn’t start until 9 so we had plenty of time to check in and rack our bikes in the transition area. We got some great race shwag!

Given that the race was a sprint and I have been training longer distances in prep for my 1/2 IM, I was feeling ready to go for this race. The race was wet suit legal, but I opted to go sans wet suit. (I think I was one of 5 out of about 700 who didn’t wear a wet suit). My swim definitely would have been faster with the suit, but my transitions were super speedy! My second transition time was :49, the fastest in my age group! The water definitely took my breath away at first but I quickly got into a rhythm and finished my swim in 11:16. The bike was 18 miles of rolling hills and I loved every minute of it! The bike is by far my weakest link, but my avg of about 18-19 mph was proof that my training is paying off! I finished the bike in 56:40 and was off on the run. The run didn’t feel so hot. The first mile was an uphill, but that wasn’t the part that phased me. I haven’t been training enough bricks yet to have my legs used to the transition from bike to run…so from mile 2-the finish my legs were REALLY cramping. I told myself it was just 3 miles and that I could easily push through the pain.  I finished my 5k in 24 flat, which I was pleased about! I raced this race 2 years ago and beat my time from 2009 by 5 minutes 🙂 I finished my race in 1:34:39, a new PR and a 6th place finish in my age group! Steph wasn’t far behind, finishing in 1:37:53 and placing 9th in our age group. She told me to tell you that she is super pleased with her race and is excited to go back and keep training for her Olympic!

Steph and I didn’t have any non competing cheerleaders at the race so didn’t get any pics mid race; however  post race, we were all about the pictures.

Right as you crossed the finish line you were handed a coupon to get a free pizza. Before the race I told Steph that I probably wouldn’t be wanting pizza right after the race…but who was I kidding….

A random guy came up to me after the race and told me that he had seen me throughout the course and the whole time I was smiling 🙂 (that would be my pizza crust haha)

We devoured our pizzas, along with a few handfuls of really awesome dried fruit and nut trail mix, packed up our stuff, put the bikes on the back of the car and headed back to D.C. We both had eyed the DQ on the drive up however and made a necessary pit stop on the way home…A peanut butter sundae for Steph and  a Reese’s blizzard for me. SO GOOD!

All in all it was a great race day for 321delish. Steph and I were both really happy with our first races of the season and left feeling ready to get back to training!

Congrats on a nice race! Chocolate is a post-race necessity. It has antioxidants. And stuff. I love trail mix, too.

Awesome race!

I love doing races in Philly, my hometown, because at the end you get soft pretzels. mmmmm salt and carbs.

I (Steph) did Philly last year, and in 2008! I really like that race! As a South Jersey girl, I love being close-ish to home:-) And, yes the Philly soft pretzels rock! I always grab some at Wawa when I’m home:-)

Congrats on an awesome race, ladies!! Your swim was embarrassingly faster than mine, Chloe! haha!:) Granted, I did have a REALLY hard time sighting at the Rumpus sprint, but mostly it’s just because I am such a slow swimmer!:) I really need to work on that!!

You guys totally rocked it and are going to rock you Olympic/HIMs! We definitely have to do some bricks together!:)

Hmm, I don’t know if I have ONE favorite post-race food, it’s more like whatever I am craving (although after two VTS races I can say the Papa Johns pizza is not too bad after a race;). After my 10 miler this spring we had some AWESOME chocolate chip pancakes. They were amazing and the perfect thing for after the race!:)

congrats ladies!!! awesome races all around. I’m also always in the 5 out of 700 people who don’t wear wetsuits…I almost didn’t on Saturday but decided to go for it at the last minute.

My favorite post-race food is watermelon (which they had at the half on saturday!) and chocolate donut holes. After the initial refueling, I can usually be found demolishing any kind of carb smothered in cheese.

I think for a longer race, the wet suit is probably the smart decision. For 750 meters, I just decided to sprint and hope for the best haha. Watermelon is always pretty awesome after any race! But yeah…carbs and more carbs are usually on my menu for the remainder of any race day too!

Your pre-race routine is the bomb — the pasta looks delishhhhh, Blue Crush is an awesome movie and PB cups…uh…
